I could see bursts of action. Our men pinned down halfway up the opposite hillsides, grenades tossed into caves. Japs jumping up and running but riddled with bullets before going fifty yards. The valley was cleared within two hours. The demolition men came in with satchel charges to seal the cave entrances. I had fired at two Jap machine-gun positions as my share of helping the action.

Called forward by Murray, Donner was told that he could find a ‘fine observation point right at the apex of the new line’. So Donner went back to get his team, and as they came forward, laying telephone wire, they passed Murray ‘being taken out on a stretcher. He had been nicked while taking a look from our good OP.’4

Meanwhile Easy Company – supported by a platoon of tanks – had taken Hill 60, and George Company the remaining enemy caves on Nan Hill. ‘This time it was a breeze’, noted Watkins, who accompanied the attack, ‘and we secured both forward and rear slopes of this hill in minutes, sealing a cave with Jap holdouts on the far side.’ The four-day battle for Hill 60 was over. Watkins’ reward, when he returned to the battalion CP that night, was to be told by Lieutenant Colonel Magee that he was the new commander of Easy. ‘It seems’, wrote Watkins, ‘that the lieutenant in charge had a chat with him and told him that I had been running the Company’. Watkins, who had had enough of the battalion staff, was delighted.5
